Michelle McGeough discusses Untitled Sexual Shaman Communication
Well many of his earlier Works depicted the oral Traditions, Norval did not shy away from producing works that were autobiographical. He would often depict himself as possessing the power of transformation and as a shaman. He also explored topics that a general audience would classify as homoerotic, but that's only one possible reading of the works that illustrate intimate scenes between two men. The images such as this one showing a male figure with an erection and the figure of a bear actually speak to Morrisseau's kinship. The bear is a family dodem and it was also one of the Anishnaabe or is one of the Anishnaabe Clans. Animals were considered to be the first teachers and by watching the animals, the two naked human beings learned how to live on these lands. The title of this work provides us with insight into what is being depicted in this drawing.
